Does the iPad 11-inch (A16) support extended display?

No. The iPad (A16), the 11-inch iPad from 2025 that many call the 11th-generation iPad, mirrors its screen to a monitor or TV: Apple keeps extended display to M-series iPads, iPadOS 27 included. Over USB-C it outputs up to 4K at 60Hz. Apps can still draw their own full-screen picture on the display, and that's how ScreenCommand puts a desktop browser there.

What sets the iPad (A16) apart

  • It drives an external display at up to 4K and 60Hz, where the iPad (10th generation) it replaced manages 4K at 30Hz, through the same USB 2 port (up to 480Mb/s).
  • Apple's Studio Display compatibility list doesn't include it, so plan on a regular USB-C or HDMI monitor, or a TV.
  • Looking up an 11-inch iPad? Several have that screen size. This one, the iPad (A16), only mirrors. Every iPad Air 11-inch has an M-series chip and extends, and so does the iPad Pro 11-inch from 2021 on; the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro 11-inch mirror too. How to connect the iPad (A16) to a monitor or TV

  • Cable (recommended): plug a USB-C monitor straight in with a USB-C cable that carries video, or use a USB-C to HDMI adapter for a TV. An HDMI 2.0 adapter gets you the full 4K 60Hz. The picture appears as soon as it's plugged in.
  • Wireless: open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring and choose your Apple TV. It works, with slightly more cursor lag than a cable.

Either way, the iPad (A16) mirrors its screen until an app draws its own picture on the TV. Open ScreenCommand and the TV shows a full-screen desktop browser instead, with the iPad (A16) as the trackpad.

What ScreenCommand puts on the TV

  • Full screen, no black bars: desktop websites at the display's own resolution, not a copy of a small screen.
  • Your device is the trackpad: glide a finger to move the cursor and tap to click, with 8 cursor styles you can see from the couch.
  • Typing: click a text field on the TV and the keyboard appears on your iPad or iPhone. A hardware keyboard works too.
  • Windows and tabs: up to 4 windows of 12 tabs each, one on the TV or two side by side, with your logins kept.
  • $4.99 one-time: no subscription, no account, zero data collection.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPad 11-inch (A16) support extended display?

No. The iPad (A16), the 11-inch iPad from 2025 that many call the 11th-generation iPad, mirrors its screen to a monitor or TV: Apple keeps extended display to M-series iPads, iPadOS 27 included. Over USB-C it outputs up to 4K at 60Hz. Apps can still draw their own full-screen picture on the display, and that's how ScreenCommand puts a desktop browser there.

What adapter does the iPad (A16) need for a TV?

A USB-C to HDMI adapter for a TV, or a USB-C cable that carries video for a USB-C monitor. With an HDMI 2.0 adapter the iPad (A16) outputs up to 4K 60Hz. Nothing needs setting up: the picture appears when you plug it in.

Can the iPad (A16) play Netflix on a TV?

Yes, over a USB-C cable. With the iPad (A16) wired to the TV, Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and Peacock play in ScreenCommand. Over AirPlay, copy-protected video goes black, so use a cable for those, or the service's own app on the TV.
