How to Screen Mirror an iPhone or iPad to a Sony BRAVIA TV (AirPlay, Cast and HDMI)

Every Sony BRAVIA with Google TV, the kind Sony has sold since 2021, has AirPlay 2 built in, and so do some earlier Android TV models, so an iPhone or iPad can mirror to them with no Apple TV. Their Chromecast built-in plays video from apps, but can't show your whole screen. On any Sony TV, AirPlay or not, a USB-C to HDMI cable works, and it's also how Netflix gets from an iPhone or iPad to the TV. This guide covers which BRAVIA has AirPlay, where to turn it on, the steps on iPhone and iPad, and the fixes when the TV won't show up.

The quick answer

  • BRAVIA with Google TV? It has AirPlay 2: Sony says every Google TV model does. On the iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring and choose the TV. If it isn't listed, turn AirPlay on in Settings > System > Apple AirPlay & HomeKit.
  • Android TV BRAVIA, or an older Sony? Only some Android TV series have AirPlay, several of them after a software update. Otherwise use a USB-C to HDMI adapter: it works on any Sony TV with an HDMI port.
  • Chromecast built-in plays apps, not your screen. Tap Cast in an app like YouTube to send its video to the TV. An iPhone or iPad can't cast its whole screen; that's what AirPlay is for.
  • Netflix goes black when you mirror? That's copy protection, and mirroring never carries it. Use the Netflix app on the BRAVIA, or connect with a cable.

The cable rows need an iPad with USB-C, or an iPhone with video over USB-C (iPhone 15 or later, except iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air); Lightning models need Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter. ScreenCommand is supported over a cable and over AirPlay to an Apple TV; we haven't verified it with the AirPlay built into Sony TVs, so the table doesn't claim it.

Does your Sony BRAVIA have AirPlay?

It depends on which kind of BRAVIA you have. Sony has made Android TV models since 2015 and Google TV models since 2021, and its AirPlay 2 and HomeKit list splits the same way.

Your BRAVIAAirPlay 2 and HomeKit
BRAVIA with Google TV (2021 onward)Every model, Sony says. The W8K (W820K), X74K and X75K series need a software update first.
BRAVIA with Android TVSome series. Sony lists the A8H, A9S and Z8H, and the X800H, X900H and X950H (X80H, X81H, KM-X9000H, X85H, X90H, X91H and X95H in some regions). After a software update, also the A9F, Z9F, A9G, Z9G, X850G and X950G (in some regions, X85G at 55 inches and up, and X95G).
Any other Sony TVNo AirPlay. Use a cable, or plug an Apple TV into a free HDMI port.

From Sony's support article on AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, checked October 2026. Sony names its series differently by region, and says update timing can vary by region and model.

Not sure which kind yours is? Press HOME on the remote. Sony says a Google TV home screen shows Google TV or a Google account icon; an Android TV home screen looks similar but has no account icon.

Or check the TV itself: on a BRAVIA with Google TV, Settings > System has an Apple AirPlay & HomeKit entry, and AirPlay appears in the list when you press Input.

No AirPlay? A cable works on any Sony TV with HDMI (below), or an Apple TV on a free HDMI port adds AirPlay and can put a full web browser on the TV.

Turn on AirPlay on a Sony BRAVIA

If AirPlay is off on the TV, it never shows up on your iPhone or iPad. On a BRAVIA with Google TV, the setting is here:

  1. Press Quick Settings on the remote and choose Settings. On some earlier Google TV models, press HOME, then choose Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Apple AirPlay & HomeKit.
  3. Open the AirPlay & HomeKit settings and make sure AirPlay is turned on.

There's a shortcut too: press Input on the remote and select AirPlay. That's also where Sony starts HomeKit setup, with on-screen steps.

Sony says AirPlay needs Google TV setup finished on the TV and an internet connection.

Android TV BRAVIA models lay out their menus differently. Update the software first, since several series only get AirPlay that way, then look for Apple AirPlay & HomeKit in Settings, or check the Help Guide for your model on Sony's site.

Screen mirror an iPhone or iPad to the BRAVIA

These are Apple's steps, the same on iPhone and iPad. Sony's help pages call it Mirroring; on the iPhone it's Screen Mirroring.

  1. Turn the TV on, and connect the iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as the BRAVIA.
  2. Open Control Center: swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, such as iPhone SE, swipe up from the bottom edge.
  3. Tap Screen Mirroring and choose your Sony TV.
  4. If an AirPlay code appears on the TV, type it on the iPhone or iPad. The screen now shows on the TV.

To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.

The TV shows an exact copy of your screen in your device's shape: black bars at the sides of an iPad's picture, and a narrow strip in the middle for an iPhone held upright. Turn the iPhone sideways in apps that rotate, like Photos and video apps, to fill more of the TV.

Why mirroring can't fill the TV, and what can: screen mirroring vs ScreenCommand.

AirPlay from inside an app vs mirroring your screen

Screen Mirroring sends a copy of everything: your Home Screen, notifications, whatever you type.

The AirPlay button inside an app sends just that video, photo or song, and the BRAVIA plays it in its own shape while the rest of your screen stays on your device. Tap AirPlay in a video player, or in Photos tap Share, then AirPlay, and choose the TV.

Apple notes that some video apps don't support AirPlay. Netflix is one of them: its help center says AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad isn't supported with Netflix.

HomeKit is the other half of Sony's AirPlay menu. Set it up from Input, then AirPlay, and Sony says you can then control the TV with Siri or the Home app.

To turn the TV on from the iPhone, Sony's help guides point to Settings > Network & Internet > Remote start, set to On (Powered on by apps). On the BRAVIA 9 II, 7 II and 3 II, it's Energy modes in the Eco Dashboard instead.

Chromecast built-in: casting from an iPhone app

BRAVIA TVs with Google TV also have Chromecast built-in, which Sony's newer help guides call Google Cast. It doesn't show your screen: an app with a Cast button hands its video to the TV, which streams it itself.

  1. Connect the iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV.
  2. Open an app with a Cast button, such as YouTube, and find what you want to watch.
  3. Tap the Cast button and choose the BRAVIA. The video plays on the TV.

Google says casting from iOS 14 or later needs Local Network access for the app, so tap Allow when iOS asks whether the app may find devices on your network.

Casting sends an app's video, not your screen. Google describes casting a whole screen as a feature for Android phones on Android 8.0 or later, so an iPhone or iPad can't do it. To show your whole screen, use AirPlay or a cable.

Netflix won't cast here. Its help center lists the devices its phone app still casts to (older Chromecasts, Google Nest Hub displays, and select Vizio and Compal TVs) and says to use the TV's own remote on anything else. Open Netflix on the BRAVIA instead.

If the TV doesn't appear in an app's Cast list on a newer model, check Settings > System > Cast on the BRAVIA, which Sony says sets the permissions for casting from other devices.

More on casting from an iPhone, and Google TV sets from other brands: iPad or iPhone to Google TV or Chromecast.

Sony | BRAVIA Connect and the Google TV app: remotes, not mirroring

Two phone apps come up when you look for a BRAVIA remote. Here's what their makers say they do:

  • Sony | BRAVIA Connect is Sony's free app for its TVs and home theater products: it works the TV from your phone and helps with setup and troubleshooting. Its App Store page lists the BRAVIA 9 II, 9, 8 II, 8, 7 II, 7, 5, 3 II, 3, 2 II, A95L and XR8 series and needs iOS 15 or later. It used to be called Home Entertainment Connect.
  • Google's apps turn an iPhone into a remote for Google TV and Android TV devices: in the Google Home app, tap the TV, then Open remote, and type on the TV with the iPhone's keyboard. Sony keeps its own list of BRAVIA models that work with the Google TV app.
  • Neither mirrors your screen. Their descriptions don't mention screen mirroring or casting. To get the iPhone's screen on the TV, use AirPlay or a cable.

The HDMI cable route: works on any Sony TV

A cable works on every Sony TV with an HDMI port, AirPlay or not, and needs no Wi-Fi, no code and no setting on the TV. It has less delay than AirPlay, and it's the connection that lets Netflix and other protected video through.

  1. Plug a USB-C to HDMI adapter into the iPhone or iPad, or use a single cable with USB-C on one end and HDMI on the other.
  2. Run an HDMI cable from the adapter to a free HDMI port on the BRAVIA. Sony recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI cable with the HDMI logo.
  3. Press Input on the remote and select the HDMI input you plugged into.
  4. The screen appears on the TV. If the adapter has a charging port, plug in the charger to keep the battery up.
  • iPads: every iPad with USB-C sends video. Through an HDMI 2.0 adapter, the iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), every M-series iPad Air and every USB-C iPad Pro send up to 4K at 60Hz; the iPad (10th generation), iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad Air (4th generation) top out at 4K at 30Hz.
  • iPhones: iPhone 15 and later send video over USB-C, except the iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, which send none. Use AirPlay with those.
  • Lightning iPhones and iPads need Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable, at up to 1080p.

A cable still mirrors, with the same black bars, unless an app draws its own picture for the TV, like a video app. An iPad with an M-series chip can extend instead and use the TV as a second display: see which iPads support extended display.

Netflix goes black when you mirror? Why, and what works

Streaming services protect their video with DRM, and AirPlay Screen Mirroring never carries protected video: the picture goes black while menus, subtitles and often the sound keep going. Nothing is wrong with the BRAVIA. Netflix goes further: its help center says AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad isn't supported at all.

What works instead, cheapest first:

  • The app on the BRAVIA. Netflix runs on many Sony TVs, and Netflix says most Sony remotes have a Netflix button. Sign in on the TV and leave the iPhone out of it: free, and the best picture.
  • A service's own AirPlay or Cast button. Where an app has one, it sends the stream itself rather than your screen. Not Netflix: it doesn't support AirPlay, and its cast list doesn't include Sony TVs.
  • A USB-C to HDMI cable. Over a cable, the Netflix app plays on the TV. Plug the adapter straight into the TV: a splitter or capture card in between can break the HDCP copy-protection handshake.
  • A browser on the TV, over the same cable. ScreenCommand plays Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and Peacock on the TV over a USB-C cable, not over AirPlay.

Sony BRAVIA AirPlay not working? Try these

  • The BRAVIA isn't in the Screen Mirroring list. Check that the TV is on, that AirPlay is on (Settings > System > Apple AirPlay & HomeKit on Google TV models), and that the TV and the iPhone or iPad are on the same network. Sony also says AirPlay needs an internet connection.
  • Accept Sony's privacy policy. Sony says AirPlay, HomeKit and the Apple TV app need Sony Smart TV services turned on through the BRAVIA privacy policy. Press Input and select Help (or press HELP), go to Status & Diagnostics, open the privacy settings and accept Sony Smart TV services. Then press Input and select AirPlay again.
  • Update the TV. Press Input, select Help, then Status & Diagnostics, System software update and Software update; if Help isn't in the list, select Edit and add it. Several Sony series only get AirPlay through an update. Update the iPhone or iPad too, in Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Restart both. Sony's own AirPlay fix starts with restarting the iPhone or iPad. To restart the TV, hold the Power button on the remote for about 5 seconds; if that doesn't help, unplug the TV, wait two minutes and plug it back in.
  • Added the TV to the Home app? Apple says to check that Home Settings aren't restricting AirPlay: in the Home app, tap More, then Home Settings, then Speakers & TV.
  • Black bars on both sides. That's the iPad's or iPhone's shape, not a fault, and stretching it with Wide mode distorts it. To fill the TV, play video with an app's AirPlay or Cast button, connect an M-series iPad by cable and extend, or use an app that draws its own picture, like ScreenCommand.
  • The picture is cut off or the wrong size over HDMI. While the HDMI picture is showing, press MENU (More options on some remotes) and try another Wide mode or Display area. On some models, Wide mode and Auto wide are under Settings > Display & Sound > Screen.
  • “No signal” over a cable. Press Input and pick the exact HDMI input you plugged into, reseat both ends and try another port. Check that the adapter is made for video, and that the iPhone isn't an iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e or iPhone Air, which send no video over USB-C.
  • Picture or sound goes wrong over HDMI. If that input's HDMI signal format, under Settings > Channels & Inputs > External inputs, is set to an Enhanced format, Sony says some devices won't output picture and sound correctly. Set it back to Standard format.
  • Video jumps to the TV on its own. On the iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Automatically AirPlay and choose Ask or Never.

Where ScreenCommand fits

Mirroring shows the iPhone or iPad on the BRAVIA. ScreenCommand shows the web instead: a desktop browser that fills the TV at its own resolution, edge to edge, with your iPad or iPhone as the trackpad and keyboard. It works on iPads that can only mirror, and on iPhone too.

  • Any Sony TV with HDMI, over a cable. Google TV, Android TV or older, AirPlay or not. A cable is the recommended connection, with the lowest cursor lag.
  • Or through an Apple TV plugged into the BRAVIA, over AirPlay, with a little more cursor lag. Here's how to get a web browser on Apple TV.
  • Streaming over a cable. Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and Peacock play in ScreenCommand over a USB-C cable, not over AirPlay. YouTube and other web video play over either.
  • Websites, not apps. ScreenCommand shows web pages. For an iPhone game or app on the TV, use Screen Mirroring.
  • $4.99 one-time. No subscription, no account to create, zero data collection.

Not promised: the AirPlay built into Sony TVs

We haven't verified ScreenCommand with the AirPlay built into BRAVIA TVs, so we don't claim it works there. If your Sony TV has a free HDMI port, use a cable.

It needs an iPad with USB-C on iPadOS 17 or later, or an iPhone on iOS 17 or later. Over a cable, an iPhone needs USB-C video out: iPhone 15 or later, except iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air.

Frequently asked questions

How do I screen mirror my iPhone to a Sony BRAVIA TV?

Put the iPhone and the TV on the same Wi-Fi network, open Control Center on the iPhone, tap Screen Mirroring and choose the BRAVIA, then type the code if the TV shows one. The same steps work on an iPad. If the TV isn't listed, turn AirPlay on: on a BRAVIA with Google TV, it's in Settings > System > Apple AirPlay & HomeKit. A Sony TV without AirPlay needs a USB-C to HDMI cable instead.

Does my Sony BRAVIA support AirPlay?

If it runs Google TV, yes: Sony says every BRAVIA with Google TV, sold since 2021, supports AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, though the W8K (W820K), X74K and X75K series need a software update first. Some Android TV models have it too, such as the A8H, A9S, Z8H, X900H and X950H series, and the A9F, Z9F, A9G, Z9G, X850G and X950G after an update. Other Sony TVs don't, but any Sony TV with HDMI works with a cable.

Can I AirPlay to a Sony BRAVIA without an Apple TV?

Yes, if the BRAVIA has AirPlay 2 built in, as every Sony Google TV model does. The TV itself is the AirPlay receiver: choose it in Screen Mirroring on the iPhone or iPad, or tap the AirPlay button in a video app. You only need an Apple TV to add AirPlay to a Sony TV that doesn't have it, and a USB-C to HDMI cable is the other way in.

Why is AirPlay not working on my Sony BRAVIA?

Usually one of five things: AirPlay is off in Settings > System > Apple AirPlay & HomeKit, the TV and the iPhone are on different networks, the TV has no internet connection, Sony Smart TV services haven't been accepted in the TV's privacy settings, or the TV needs a software update. Restart both. If your model isn't on Sony's AirPlay list, it has no AirPlay and needs a cable.

Can I cast my iPhone screen to a Sony TV with Chromecast built-in?

No. From an iPhone or iPad you can cast video from apps with a Cast button, such as YouTube, but Google describes casting a whole screen as an Android feature. To show your whole iPhone screen on a BRAVIA, use Screen Mirroring over AirPlay, which Sony's Google TV models have built in, or a USB-C to HDMI cable.

Why is Netflix black when I mirror my iPhone to a Sony TV?

AirPlay Screen Mirroring never carries copy-protected video, and Netflix doesn't support AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad at all, so the picture goes black, often with the sound still playing. Netflix's casting doesn't include Sony TVs either. Use the Netflix app on the BRAVIA, or connect with a USB-C to HDMI cable: over a cable, Netflix plays in its own app and in ScreenCommand.

How do I connect an iPhone or iPad to an older Sony TV without AirPlay?

Use a cable. Plug a USB-C to HDMI adapter into an iPad with USB-C, or an iPhone 15 or later (the iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air send no video over USB-C); Lightning models need Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Run an HDMI cable to the TV, press Input and select that HDMI input. For a wireless option, plug an Apple TV into a free HDMI port.

More product questions (pricing, gestures, privacy) are covered in the main FAQ.
